Rating Explanation
Robert Welch
Robert Welch is currently a candidate for the Commercial Township Committee and has received the official endorsement of the Cumberland County Regular Republican
Organization. However, beyond that party endorsement, there is no publicly available campaign information—no website, no social media, no event notices, and no clear
platform outlining his goals or qualifications for the role.
Welch’s endorsement suggests that the party knows who he is, yet the public does not. Despite two years of attending the bi-weekly Republican breakfasts, which often
feature active candidates and sitting officials, no clear introduction or campaign messaging from Welch has been made available through those channels.
This highlights a broader issue with the transparency of the endorsement process itself. The Cumberland County Republican endorsement convention, held in March, was
open only to party committee members and insiders—not the general public. As a result, while the party infrastructure has clearly advanced Welch's candidacy, engaged
residents and politically curious voters have been left entirely out of the loop.
It’s one thing for a candidate to remain under the radar during a quiet campaign season—but it’s another when that candidate is handpicked by party leadership without
any corresponding effort to engage the public. That disconnect undermines the spirit of open elections, particularly at the local level where direct engagement should
be the norm, not the exception.
Welch may very well be qualified and have valuable ideas—but without sharing them publicly, voters are left guessing.
For these reasons, Robert Welch receives a very low rating for transparency and accessibility.
